On my newley finished Email/DOS games machine, I got the Crusader games to install. But part 1 gives me this error when I go to play it........

Halted File MEMORY\CPROTMEM.C, line 1616

I went to DOSgames.com and tried a common DOS trick but it didn't work. I right clicked the games .exe and on the Memory tab, all the drop down boxes were put to the maximum value. The website didn't have anything more on memory problems for DOS games.

Can anyone help me out on this? Crusader part 2 works just fine, but part 1 wont run.
System specs are.......... 98se, 512pc133, tnt2 ultra, asus mobo, sb live.

The game install's just fine, it just wont start because of this memory problem.

You might try Abandon Loader (http://www.angelfire.com/realm/zeroone/). It's a nifty freeware program that does nothing but run DOS games under different flavors of Windows. Good stuff.

Better yet, I suggest DosBox, a DOS emulator!

Yes, I would definitely use Dosbox. The chances of you getting games like Crusader to run on modern processors and memory in a native dos environment is pretty low. Emulation is pretty much the only way to go.

I also want to throw my vote in for DOSBox. It is everything DOS should have been but couldn't be. It runs every game/app I have ever needed flawlessly.

are you "restarting the computer in dos mode"?

I used to run the game on 98se, but at the time, I only have something like 128 or 256 ram and a 300 cely O/C'd to 450mhz. I didn't think that the 512ram and 2.1ghz cpu would matter since it's still in the 98se environment.

I ahve tried DOSbox on my Xp pro machine, but I cant get DOSbox to work. I didn't think I would need it for 98se.

Could it be the PCI sound card? Do you have some legacy mode driver loading up so that the game can address it like it expects, and old 16bit ISA card?

The SB Live includes drivers that let it emulate an ISA sound card. I remember them being 'ok' but not working with certain games.

Yeah, I had a Turtle Beach that was the same way. That is why I was sad to see ISA and my AWE32 go away.

Edit: I don't think I loaded emu drivers those with my Live! Value though.

This "old" machine is the same thing that I used to play the Crusader games on, except that it is now a 2.1ghz cpu and 512 of pc133 ram. I never had this much memory installed the last time I played Crusader, so I am thinking that has something to do with it, since it gives me a memory error. Thing is, I dont have anything smaller than a single 256mb stick of ram, so I cant switch out the ram and hope DOS will like it.

Some games just won't run on newer processors (even P1 processors) because of the way they handle memory and the such, so no matter what you do unless you use emulation the games will never run.

The game install's just fine, it just wont start because of this memory problem. Sounds to me that the "first part" of the game is corrupted. I'd just go to an abandonware site and download another copy of the game. Those old disks don't last forever you know. IMO, stick with using original DOS as opposed to DOSbox. DOSbox does has it's advantages (ie. King's Quest 1 is better on DOSbox 'cus you can speed up the game. You can also take screenshots of anywhere, and can smooth things out to make 'em look better)

I thought it wouldn't be too bad to ask my question here. I am playing Crescent Hawk's Revenge, found it at a abandonware site and the text part is SO HUGE I have to sit back 2-3 feet further away when I'm reading the text. What video mode should I set it at?
