I bought it last week. I've had a LOT of fun with it so far. To me, it seems like a perfect blend of WWII RTS the likes of Blitzkrieg or Desert Rats: DRvAK, and the Commandos series. In the campaign missions, you'll spend a lot of time watching after your squad of men (usually around four). You can play the game like a standard RTS, selecting units and sending them here and there, or you can take direct control of them, then use the arrow keys to move them around (especially fun with tanks and armored vehicles).

Your soldiers and vehicles have an inventory, as do your enemies. This means that every soldier you kill will remain on the screen for you to loot. You can even take their helmet if yours gets blown off. Every vehicle has an ammo and fuel level. If you're running low on ammo or fuel, you can take some from another vehicle or stockpile on the map.

The game has a really nice physics engine as well. Buildings are completely destructible, with debris realistically tumbling to the ground. Vehicle debris is also very reaslistically modelled. Soldiers can gib as well. This is especially satisfying. It's great when you see a soldier pull out a heavy grenade, pull the pin, then get taken out by one of your men, only to have the grenade then detonate, sending his limbs in different directions, a bloody little leg spinning in the air, before bouncing off the ground with a puff of blood. Yeah, it's nice.

There are a number of approaches to take when playing the game, ranging from fairly stealthy to all out killing-spree. There's a wide variety of ways to let loose the carnage. One of my favorite low-tech ways to disable even the mightiest tank is to drop a Molatov cocktail on its engine, stopping the tank, with the hatch soon flying open, flaming crew members screaming before being shot by my men. Then all you need to do is get a repair kit, fix up the tank, and it's yours!

I could go on and on, but I'd rather just play. Try the demo!

I agree, "soldiers" is a great game and lots of fun. The best thing imo is the interactive environment. Your men take cover, lean back to walls and check from corners, etc... it is a living game going on the screen. set the scene and watch the show av_smile.gif

It's great that you can click on walls and corners and have your soldiers lean up against them for cover. It's really neat to see your mean automatically lean out from a corner, shoot for a second, then lean back. Another cool thing to is to hide in the bushes, and ambush passing troops or armor.

This game installs Starforce 3.1

Even if you remove it, when you run the game it re-installs it av_frown.gif

It's very helpful as you'll likely be saving very often as you pull of some lucky attack or spend ten minutes pillaging vehicles and corpses in order to trick-out your soldiers.

yes, that bothered me also and I sent a message to official forums. one of the admins pointed me to a FAQ - StarForce thread and there I've seen that the version of Starforce that is bundled with Soldiers does not collect any info on software installed on your computer or report anything through your internet connection.

I really like the game and take their word for starforce part. If this is the price to play a game I like (because developer/publisher will feel safe), I can leave the CD in my drive...

I tried the demo, I think the control is a little bit tedious...since the figures are so small! and this game is HARD... av_eek.gif !!

and it eats the memory capacity on the video card...I couldn't run it on the highest setting for the video... av_razz.gif

man this game is hard... graemlins/av_sad.gif

Fun game, but not what i was expecting. First mission you control 1 tank, 1 APC and 2 infantry. OK so i assumed next mission i would be allowed more..but no..next mission i get a whole 2 infantry yo work with...Boooooring!

I prefer proper war games where i am given more units to work with. I was never much a fan of commando's style men kill 21 Tanks, 34 APC's and 56 infantry with just your two infantry units!

PLus the camera is quite possible the worst camera i have ever had the misfortune to use. And dont get me started on the God awful pathfinding.

All in all im struggling to see why this game got rave reviews

I recognize the problems that have been addressed in the thread, but honestly I haven't really noticed them. I'm not blind, but I'm just having too much fun with the game as it is to really see them. I think it's the open-ended'ness of the game design, the damage modelling, physics, graphics, and sheer fun factor (for those like me who like Commandos and tactical RTS games)that win me over.

I got to play my first co-op multiplayer for this game and man what a blast it was.
It lets you play all the campaigns and bonus maps with 3 other guys...
With comms its a great experience. Although I will warn you there is no ingame browser until the next patch, which is expected to come out in the next two weeks. so finding a game can be a chore...

Sadly that doesnt work, you then try to "Tilt" the camera and then look around..Opps you can only tilt the camera by a miniscule ammount. So you end up having to pause the game and scroll around looking for what it is that might be shooting you.

I Completed the Russian Campaign pretty easily, and am disapointed.

The first russian mission is pretty God Damned GOOD! (This is the one you guys get in the demo i think), involving tanks, APC's infantry, rivers blowing buildings up, hills etc. It took me 2 days to complete this one.

Mission 2 is pathetically easy, can be completed in a few minutes once you realise the "trick" Oh yea, this mission you control a grand total of 2 men.. and no tanks etc available..ZZzzz

Mission 3..felt so generic i can barely remember it. You again only control a few infantry. No tanks or vehicles.

Final mission, nothing special excpet a wicked battle at the end of the mission.

I have since stopped playing the game until they fix the camera, its totally game killing for me. Pathing is extremely poor too, which is probably why they only let you play with a few men or units per mission.

Its just not what i hoped. Its not realistic, you men can take quite a beating from guns, you generally only get to control a few people, and often ahve no vehicles available to use. There is virtually no AI. Its all done with scripts..Re-play a mission after winning it, and you will see what i mean.. replayability is limited due to this.

Oh yea, and the second game killer.

The guns, Vehicles weapons, cars etc all have NO STATS!

Many times you come across several different types of tank, and you have ZERO way of knowing what the differences are, except using them and trying to guess. There are no stats in the manual, Codemasters say they will add them on their site when they get time. Until then, Good luck in figuring out whether the British Sniper Rifle or the US Version has the longer range for a critical kill..or which does more damage.

Rant over. IMO the various review people have incorrectly labelled this one a classic..but this is simple my perspective
