Obama says in his first post-election press conference that he's spoken to all the former presidents — Carter, Bush, Clinton, as well as the current Bush — and, looser than he's been in months, dares a joke at the expense of the widow of the most recently deceased.

"I have spoken to all of them who are living," he says. "I didn’t want to get into a Nancy Reagan thing about doing any séances," he says.

He was responding to a question, from the Chicago Sun-Times' Lynn Sweet, about whether he'd spoken to all of the "living" former presidents.

He was apparently referring to the reports in the 1980s that Nancy Reagan consulted an astrologer while in the White House. Mary Todd Lincoln, however, reportedly held actual séances

Jokes like this are going to bring the country together? besides consulting an Astrologer is not holding a Seances.

As much as I don't like him, I don't think he did anything wrong.

Both astrology and "speaking with the dead" are equal in a sense that both are just about the highest degree of bull**** one can indulge in. Well, religion aside. So yes, I think he is fully within his right to make a joke of it. And it's not as if the joke is offensive.

Nah, no problem with this. If we can't laugh at ourselves... ya know?

Also, Mrs Clinton did sim things.

Well, if he is going to tell a joke teh least he can do is get it right but I still feel this was very disrespectful.

People can only be offended by things if they want to be offended. Unfortunately, people love to find things to get offended by.

This I feel like is just fishing for something to get offended over.

I agree with Katie, someone's always going to be offended. I'd rather see Obama tell bad jokes than McCain doing some really good SNL skits. The last thing the White House needs is another joker.

I suppose it wasn't really necessary for Obama to tell this joke, but he did it anyway.

There'll be snakes in the Oval Office, Mofo. :D (I'm kidding...)

Once Obama is in office, he'll have to weigh his words carefully though.

Nancy Reagan has a right to be. And yeah, it was a stupid thing for him to say. I think he's still riding high on the euphoria wand wasn't thinking.

It was a bad joke. That's the comedy rule: If you make an offensive joke and it's good enough that people laugh, you generally get away with it. Make a lame joke that's potentially offensive and it just seems . . . offensive.
