I really wish it was illegal to make politics a career, then we wouldn't have to deal with things such as this:

Adapted from "Imperial Life in the Emerald City," by Rajiv Chandrasekaran, copyright Knopf 2006After the fall of Saddam Hussein's government in April 2003, the opportunity to participate in the U.S.-led effort to reconstruct Iraq attracted all manner of Americans -- restless professionals, Arabic-speaking academics, development specialists and war-zone adventurers. But before they could go to Baghdad, they had to get past Jim O'Beirne's office in the Pentagon.
To pass muster with O'Beirne, a political appointee who screens prospective political appointees for Defense Department posts, applicants didn't need to be experts in the Middle East or in post-conflict reconstruction. What seemed most important was loyalty to the Bush administration.

O'Beirne's staff posed blunt questions to some candidates about domestic politics: Did you vote for George W. Bush in 2000? Do you support the way the president is fighting the war on terror? Two people who sought jobs with the U.S. occupation authority said they were even asked their views on Roe v. Wade.
Many of those chosen by O'Beirne's office to work for the Coalition Provisional Authority, which ran Iraq's government from April 2003 to June 2004, lacked vital skills and experience. A 24-year-old who had never worked in finance -- but had applied for a White House job -- was sent to reopen Baghdad's stock exchange. The daughter of a prominent neoconservative commentator and a recent graduate from an evangelical university for home-schooled children were tapped to manage Iraq's $13 billion budget, even though they didn't have a background in accounting.

Considering some of the folks who were in Baghdad and working for the CPA I find that surprising. I guess he wasn't screening everyone.

edit: interesting that he calls it the "U.S. occupation authority" rather than properly calling it the Coalition Provisional Authority each time. I know nothing about the book, but would it be a safe assumption that it is generally not favorable to the US Govoernment?

I would say the book is biased, but at the same time what I quoted actually happened. It just angers me that people would hire for politics rather than capabilities. I could understand if they were hiring a campaign manager or something similar, but handing over a budget of billions to someone with no experience is not acceptable. I hate it when the people I vote for self destruct. Independant party is looking very nice now. I might even join those crazy Libertarians (Where are you Todd! :p).

Respectfully, you quoted what the book alleged to have happened. From my experience I can say that a number of the people working for the CPA were without question unqualified. I can also say without question that their political views were completely out of sync with the President's. That makes me somewhat leery of this book. There were plenty of people there who were very much opposed to the President, his administration, his policies and his party.

However, I will also say that is is by no means limited to politics. People get hired in many areas for reasons other than their capabilities and qualifications. Have you ever heard of the (cunningly titled) "similar to me" effect?

I haven't heard of "similar to me", but I have no problems imagining what it means.

I'd imagine not. :) But just to make sure we're on the same page it refers to people's preference for hiring people who are similar to them on multiple levels. It is not as restrictive as it sounds and can be over some rather broad categories. Generally it is far more subtle than blatant and often the hiring manager isn't even conscious of it.

Cronyism and nepotism are involved in politics...> ZOMG panic!!!

This happens with every administration in every goverment. You don't want such BS impacting your goverment, you limit government. Democrat or Republican it does not matter, they will blow our tax dollars on their biggest supporters and set their buddies up with cush jobs. If you keep voting for either of these parties, suck it up and drive on. Its the way they do business.

Nepotism too.

Which makes me wonder. When evil villians start recruiting for their henchmen, which do they prefer. Family or cronies?

Definitely cronies, family may try and take over the family business Cronies you can dispose of without feeling bad afterwards or dealing with awkward issues at family reunions.

A true politician can discard of family just as easily.

I think Ted kennedy said that once...:D

But remember that whole point about awkward family reunions, unless of course you're a Corleone. Do you really want to have to explain to your favourite sister that you had to dispose of her husband because he was getting too ambitious? Trust me, that's not a fun conversation. ;)
