View Full Version : The Irony Between Real And Fake Shark Attacks

This just occured to me tonight as I was watching the news and they talked about another shark attack in recent days. Why are people more afraid to go into the ocean after watching a movie with a fake shark attacking people than after hearing about a real shark attacking people? What the hell is wrong with this picture?
If you're gonna be stupid enough to go into the ocean after hearing about people being seriously injured or killed from shark attacks then you deserve your fate if you're attacked by one, too. I'd say it's good for thinning the herd but of course there's never any shortage of stupidity in people and like a bus there's always another one coming along at any time.

The chances of getting attacked by a shark are very slim.

and the chances of me attacking a shark are even slimmer.
Conclusion - don't pay attention to sharkattack reports. Go watch Jaws av_wink.gif
I havent been swimming in the ocean since 75 when i saw Jaws.
I havent been swimming in a lake or river since I saw Piranah. av_wink.gif
One of our former professors here had a theory about the sharks. He thinks they are swimming much closer to shore than they used to. He thinks it's because they are having difficulty finding food. However, I haven't heard any "experts" advancing this theory or that sharks are really swimming much closer to shore than in the past.
Personally, I'm with Chip! av_smile.gif

I use to fish alot, but havent in 14 years or so. For those that swim in the ocean, if you really knew what was around you and how close sharks really come around you.... av_eek.gif
I have a scar from a hammerhead and a scar from a great white incident.

I used to SCUBA a few times a year and saw several sharks (and scarier things than that, heh) while doing it. Never saw a great white though. I wish I still had money to do that type of stuff. av_smile.gif

Thats called paranoia chip. The chances of a shark actually killing you are so slim that to stay out of water would be foolish. I live 10 minutes away from the beach and I don't think we've had a shark attack since I lived here. And there are plenty of surfers that would be great food.
I have been hurt twice by sharks. I dont think odds are on my side.

I have been surfing and swimming in the ocean since I was 5. I have seen many sharks and even the dreaded carpet shark once. It is part of the risk you take. If you are not a risk taker then stay out of the ocean. The risk is extremely small when you consider the millions of people that are in the water at any given time.

We(as I 'm sure you know) have our fair share of sharks around here, but I tell ya, it's not them that keep me out of the water. It's these little buggers. Box Jellyfish (http://www.barrierreefaustralia.com/the-great-barrier-reef/jellyfish.htm) and the Blue ringed octopus (http://www.barrierreefaustralia.com/the-great-barrier-reef/blueringedoctopus.htm)

Red Jellyfish and snapping turtles are scary too. (close run-ins with both)
but sharks. nah never afraid of em.
the water is too polluted for them or they'd get run over by a boat here.

Now they are like war stories but at the time some of that scared the **** out of me.
