View Full Version : Grammar advice
This is for all you grammar trolls out there. A warning, though, since this is supposedly a family-oriented forum, that the page I am linking to has a bit of foul language on it.
Enjoy! (http://www.guidenet.net/resources/wanker.html)
My personal favourites are point number one under "Mispunctuate" and "Ignore proper spelling and usage", as they are the errors I see most all over the web. I've even noticed them in a local PC gaming magazine (from the editor, no less!).
PS: I did a search for this particular topic and I didn't get a hit, so please forgive me if this has been posted before.

I liked this one:
"Another good way to make yourself look like a total wanker is to twist other people's positions beyond credibility. If you're arguing with a member of the NRA, for instance, assume that they support private ownership of main battle tanks and rebut appropriately."

Many of the things I can agree with, but I really don't understand a grammar nazi's obsession with a casual board. If you are posting to have real discussion and conversation (like a scienctific or business board) then good grammar is called for. A site like this one, or others that are more casual, are not the place to obsess over perfect langauge. After all in the context of the sentence you should be able to understand what the writer meant even if they missused a homonym.
Professional web sites should always be free from grammatical errors. Who really cares about a site a person puts up to show off pics of the kids over Christmas?
I also often wonder if individual that make such a big freaking deal over grammar on the net makes the same fuss over speaking in person. Tell me, do you interrupt conversation to correct the way a person pronounces a word? If they inflect incorrectly and indicate a question rather than a statement, do you jump their case for not speaking properly? Say a person pauses for some reason, do you get irate that they did not properly pause, say by using 5 ellipes of time instead of three?
But what I really like is that the article has several spots saying that ad-hominem attacks are wrong. Unless of course you are using poor grammar, in which case you are a tool and nothing you say should be taken with any validity.

I tend to judge posts more on content than on presentation.

I'm posting that on a forum that I moderate! Out of 3895 members there, most are just about described by this guide.

Heh, it's even prettier sight on mirc, where you see all arabs and such with so lousy grammar that it isn't even described on this guide.
I also hate all the (kratice, shortages, okrajsave, don't know how to say it - AIDS for example) how r u 2day, brb, and stuff like that. It makes me go nuts. asl?!? It comes in 1000000* versions. Grrrr
sorry, got a bit 2 angry. got out of line...

Chat is different than postings.
The problem is when people post in 'chat-speak'.

ok, but this comes very similar to chatting. I started to post here just to chat a bit. (general discussions is completly chatty forum)
I agree that getting the gist of someone's post is more important than every i being dotted and every t being crossed, and that obsessing over someone else's complete disregard for basic English structure is a waste of time and effort.
Still, there are days when it annoys me, and the HTWLAW article was just the chuckle I needed and I felt better after reading it, so I thought I'd share. I'm glad it found some sympathizers here!

Sometimes proper grammar is, well, improper. Sometimes it's better to be colloquial, because the "proper" grammar is just a trend which started off as everyday speech. If we were to adhere to grammar properly then we wouldn’t have romantic languages because everyone would still be speaking Latin.
Thank God I'm not going to be around when the definition of "proper grammar" has become what colloquial language is today.
Damn, I feel old.
