We've all probably noticed this by now and aren't terribly surprised. I know I'm not. Best Buy and Circuit City no longer carry them, and Target has been slowly phasing them out and soon won't sell them at all. Wal-Mart (http://money.cnn.com/2005/06/13/news/fortune500/walmart_vhs/index.htm?cnn=yes)'s following suit in February 2006, after the holiday season.
Myself, I don't care since DVD's offer so much more (better quality sound and picture, extra features, etc.), and I guess the Blu-Ray and whatever other formats that'll come out someday will too. I only use blank tapes to of course record shows and that's it. I know, I should get a DVR recorder and maybe will one day.
So, how does anyone else feel about tapes being phased out?

I only rent them when a movie is not available in full screen. I despise wide screen, and no matter what any fanboy says, it's the biggest crock of ****. Other than that, goodbye VHS. I loved you so, but times have changed. I'll still use you to record tv shows av_cool.gif

Yeah, I used to buy Full Screen versions of DVDs until one time I rented one that had both wide and full frame on the same disc. I compared, then started buying widescreen only. You miss too much!

Anyone watched Cowboy Bebop before? One episode, he goes to an antique shop and the owner goes all crazy when he brings in a VHS tape. av_razz.gif

And those pix are why I prefer WS. I'll only buy FS if that's the only format the movie or TV show was filmed in. Besides, panning back and forth instead of just seeing everything onscreen at once is very annoying to me. I just want a stagnant picture, damnit!
I've also seen some WS films that aren't all that much wider than FS, either, so you're not really seeing all that much more anyway, but I'd still prefer that over FS any day. Not to make a rhyme there, of course. graemlins/av_cheesygrin.gif

Well I do hope that the noteworthy films that are still only on VHS will get translated onto DVD. I shudder to think that a brilliant sublime horror classic like The Innocents will be lost.

Mark: thats b/c there are different aspect ratios for theatrical films. Even with full frame films, you are missing some picture data... but this cannot be helped.
I have already listed them all in other threads and Im too lazy to retype all that again. Do search for "widescreen" or "aspect ratio" and you should find all the good info I posted,
Prediction - About 3- 4 years after the demise of VHS, some high-end cinephile magazine will state that VHS has "..increased tonality and a more genuine warmth that DVDs simply cannot match." A few low budget but highly influential indie films will be released only on VHS. Extremely expensive VHS players will be made by small New England companies named after 17th century French artists. Talking about DVDs will be the social equivalent of talking about buying socks at Wal-Mart. Your parents will rejoice. av_razz.gif

Kinda figured that, anyway, and also curious as to why that is but I guess it mostly depends on what the director is able to work with, as far as what he or she is either allowed to by the studio or can afford themselves, or for whatever other reason there may be.

It just depends on what aspect ratio the director wishes to shoot-in.
However, some aspect ratios and formats are easier to transfer to video than others (again do a search on my old posts for more info)
